Does The Regular Season Really Matter To Anyone?

Obviously the regular season matters in respect to teams' records and if they get in to the playoffs/tournaments or not. Other than that, it's all about the post season.
NCAA basketball rewards conference tournament champions with automatic bids to the big dance, not the regular season conference champions.
No season is complete for any team without winning the postseason championship. 07-08 New England Patriots- go undefeated, 16-0 in the regular season; lose to the New York Football Giants in Super Bowl XLII to finish 18-1. Not a complete season. Great year, but no championship trophy to show for it, and not a complete season.
New York Yankees could be in first place all season long, great, but I'm waiting til October to really start caring because if they don't win the World Series, that year sucked. No matter what they accomplished all regular season.
Miami Heat current winning streak- couldn't care less. Partly because it's the Heat and I hate everything about the Heat. And I blame Sportscenter for a lot of that hatred because of SC's love affair with the Heat and their constant need to be talking about the Heat or something one of the players might have tweeted (especially during this streak). That, however, is a whole other topic in itself and will be discussed another time. But my lack of interest mainly has to do with the fact that it is a regular season streak. Even if it were the Knicks on this streak, I would still be saying, "Cool- but what are they going to do come the playoffs?"
The regular season is when a team comes together, grows, and works hard to get better. They do all this for what though? - To be successful in the post season and get thier hands on a Post-Season Championship Trophy...
